About This Test

HIV is a virus that can be transmitted through unprotected sex, sharing injection equipment, blood transfusions, or from mother to child during pregnancy, childbirth, or breastfeeding. It can affect anyone regardless of gender or age and may cause symptoms such as prolonged fever, swollen lymph nodes, unexplained fatigue, and weight loss – but in many cases, there are no noticeable signs for a long time. A test that detects both HIV-1/2 antibodies and p24 antigen is therefore the most reliable way to find out if you are carrying the virus, even at an early stage before the immune system has developed measurable antibody levels. The analysis is used both in cases of suspected exposure and as a preventive check to ensure safe sexual health and to enable prompt medical follow-up if the virus is detected. Early testing and treatment are crucial to avoid complications such as reduced immune function, opportunistic infections, and development of AIDS.

Important Information Before Testing

  • !
Avoid testing when you have a cold, fever, or are generally unwell, as immune activation can affect the test results.
  • !
Do not fast before testing. You can eat and drink as usual
  • !
Do not take the test too soon after suspected exposure. To ensure a reliable result, it is recommended to wait approximately 4 weeks from exposure, when both HIV antibodies and p24 antigen can usually be detected.
  • !
If you have recently received a blood transfusion, plasma infusion, or immunoglobulin treatment, the test should be postponed as it may affect the results and give false outcomes.
